Hosting relatively high-flying Stuttgart immediately firing manager Michael Oenning meant that nobody gave Hamburg much of a chance, and for the first half it looked as though they were right to do so. The visitors earned a goal in the eighteenth minute after Martin Hamik latched onto a spilled shot - not Jaroslav Drobny's first error of the evening, nor the last - and continued to pound Hamburg's goal, hitting the post and missing an open net.
