Cardoso does not have the required qualifications to act as a head coach in Germany but was allowed to sit on the bench for the two matches since the sacking of Michael Oenning two weeks ago.
He will not, however, be allowed to continue in this role beyond the 15-day grace period, meaning someone else must be in the dugout next time out.
"The DFL has not granted Hamburger SV's wishes of an exception in the case of Cardoso," Germany’s league announced.
"The DFL does not see any special conditions which would justify an extension of the 15-day grace period and a consequent exception to the statutes."
Director of sport Frank Arnesen has already hinted that a new man would be in charge in the coming weeks, with the international break giving the bottom-placed club time to find a successor.- http://uk.eurosport.yahoo.com
