Galaxy’s Gonzalez Goes to Germany on Loan
One day after leaving the United States national team’s training camp in Arizona for “club-related reasons,” Los Angeles Galaxy defender Omar Gonzalez flew to Germany and on Thursday agreed to a short-term loan with Nuremberg of the Bundesliga.
“We are delighted that Omar has traveled with us in training camp,” the Nuremberg spokesman Martin Bader said on the club’s Web site in a Google translation from German. “We were considering having him join us in summer 2012 but we have got the opportunity to loan him at least until the start of the M.L.S. season.” He added, “Omar is an interesting candidate, a young, talented player who could be a good fit for 1.FC Nürnberg.”
Gonzalez, 23, was Major League Soccer’s rookie of the year in 2009 after being drafted out of Maryland. He was born and grew up in Texas and holds dual U.S. and Mexican citizenship as the son of Mexican parents. Though he has played two times for the senior national team, neither of those appearances were in official FIFA competitions, which means that Gonzalez still has the option to play for either the American or the Mexican teams. A call-up for World Cup qualifying matches in June would tie the 6-foot-5-inch defender to the United States.
Nuremberg and the rest of the Bundesliga are on their winter break. The second-half of the German season will begin on Friday Jan. 20. Gonzalez is expected to remain with Nuremberg, which also has the U.S. national team defender Timmy Chandler on its roster, until the end of February. The club is currently in 15th place in the 18-team league, only 2 points above the relegation zone.- http://goal.blogs.nytimes.com
