Bayer Leverkusen have sacked coach Robin Dutt in the wake of Saturday's 2-0 defeat at home to Freiburg.
The reverse to Freiburg was Leverkusen's fourth league setback in a row to leave them in sixth spot in the Bundesliga. Dutt's assistants Damir Buric and Marco Langner have also left the club. Former Liverpool defender Sami Hyypia has been promoted from reserve team coach and will take charge of first-team affairs alongside under-19 boss Sascha Lewandowski until the end of the season. Leverkusen chairman Wolfgang Holzhaeuser felt they had no option but to dispense with the services of Dutt
"We simply had to act and send a signal that we are pursuing our goal of international competition with a fresh wind behind us," explained Holzhaeuser. Hyypia is now hoping to help the side get back to winning ways and enjoy a successful end to the season. "I know the team," said Hyypia. "I believe in this team. We want to show an insecure team... the way to get back to success."
