The ex-FCB defender has warned Marseille against the Bavarian giants' attacking potency, and insists Didier Deschamps' men can't afford to just sit back and defend
Former France international Bixente Lizarazu has hailed Bayern Munich star Mario Gomez as one of the best strikers in Europe, and also praised the Bavarians' attack ahead of Wednesday's Champions League quarter-final first-leg match against Olympique de Marseille.
Lizarazu, who wore the Bayern colours from 1997 until 2004 before leaving for Marseille, only to return to FCB again one year later, believes that the OM defenders will have to be at their very best to contain Jupp Heynckes' side.
"Bayern's attack led by Mario Gomez, one of Europe's best strikers, is incredibly dangerous. Franck Ribery is in top form and sets up lots of goals. And then you have [Arjen] Robben and [Thomas] Muller as well," Lizarazu stated to the official Bayern website. "Marseille will have to be just as alert as they were against Inter [in the round of 16], especially at the back. And they'll have to do more attacking than they did against Inter.
L'OM have lost seven of their last eight games in all competitions, but during this stretch were nonetheless able to advance to take on Bayern. And Lizarazu believes that the French side can again defy their overall form on the grand stage. "Marseille will show a different side of their character in the Champions League compared to Ligue 1, as we saw against Inter." Wednesday's match at the Stade Velodrome kicks off at 20.45CET.
